La Crosse Area Bike Route Maps are Here!

Thanks to our Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) and local bicycling advocates we now have a large (26” x 36”) La Crosse Area Bike Route Map for viewing online and several community-level maps (8.5” x 11”) available for download. You may also view the large map and obtain copies of the small maps at the Grand River Station transit center lobby. The community-level maps, which can be pieced together to form a regional map, cover:

The route maps illustrate regional and local routes, hospitals and clinics, bike shops, local eateries, and covered public bicycle parking. You may notice a few inconsistencies between the maps and the real environment:

  • The regional routes are not yet signed. This is one of the future tasks for implementing our regional bicycle routing system.

  • The existing bike route signs in La Crosse may not correspond to the routes on the maps. With the help of the members of the BPAC, the City is working on relocating the signs.

  • The route maps show Cunningham St in the north La Crosse industrial park as a bike route. This street will be constructed between Larson St and Oak St in 2011 to replace Palace St, which has been sold to Kwik Trip. Palace St between Larson St and Oak St will continue to be the bike route (and is currently signed as such) until Cunningham St is completed.

Please check out the 2035 Coulee Regional Bicycle Plan recommendations to improve bicycling in the La Crosse and La Crescent area.

Current Activities:

  • During the week of November 15, 2010, the City of La Crosse created over 6 miles of undesignated bike lanes (signage and pavement markings are to come!). Check out the bicycle accommodations on:

    • 7th St between La Crosse St and State St
    • Vine St between 3rd St and 4th St
    • 33rd St/Pammel Creek Rd between Meadow Lane Pl and Drive-In Rd
    • St Cloud/St James/River Valley Dr between Winneshiak Rd and Gillette St

  • LAPC committees continue to work on a Complete Streets policy for the La Crosse Area Planning Committee. This policy will ensure that all modes, especially the bicycle, pedestrian, and transit modes, are considered in all roadway projects.

Future Activities:

  • Designing and installing signage for the regional bike route system

  • Relocating existing and installing new bike route signs in La Crosse

  • Making the regional and local bike routing systems available on the La Crosse County and City of La Crosse mapping Web sites

  • Making the regional and local bike routing systems available on GoogleMaps
